Family albums are storytellers of family histories: they act as agents of remembering. The absence of a formal family album can be as important an indication about the a family's past as its existence. My family history is a case in point. This very personal work is about my two grandmothers whose life expectations were dictated by their gender and their social milieu. It is about the one who tossed her photographs of a promising young life into boxes and all images of her married life cut and destroyed. It is about the other one whose family and house were destroyed during the war and whose likeness I have never known. It is not only about remembering, it is also about forgetting and about abandonment as I left my family behind to come to Canada. It was exhibited as part of the Memory and Photography Lab, a collaborative 5-member exhibition at the Gallery 44 Members Gallery in early 2019.
