In this work, I reflect on the impact our civilization leaves on the environment. To illustrate this exploration, I use digital interventions and collage, installation and drawing.
The first four landscapes are from the part of Ontario I love very much: the woods, marshes, granite outcrops and lakes of the Seguin Township. As I have walked countless times across the same paths and through the same woods, the same questions return: how untouched is this seemingly wild land and do we still experience a fear of the wild and unknown?
We live in the age of relentless pursuit of progress. In this rush towards the future we are leaving behind enormous waste of various materials, from everyday garbage to dilapidated buildings, such as the abandoned ironworks in the Czech Republic, a granite quarry in Ontario, rusty harbour equipment in Newfoundland. Although these images possess their own eerie beauty, they can also be seen as a warning sign: Nothing is permanent! Eventually, the nature takes over.
The last five images were part of Spectra One, a group exhibition by Gallery 44 members at Artscape Youngplace in conjunction with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival 2021.
